Sikkim offers its visitors a fantastic trekking experience. Sandwiched between eastern Nepal and Bhutan, the country is effectively a unique Buddhist protectorate within the borders and jurisdiction of India.
Our trekking route takes us through lush Himalayan foothills, through moss laden forests with both tropical and coniferous trees. We start our trek Yuksom, passing through Bakhim, Dzongri, Thanksing and Lamuney. It is here that we will make an acclimatisation excursion to Samity Lake. Our route ascends to the crest of a moraine ridge where we find ourselves on the shores of the sacred Samity Lake, ringed by prayer flags and reflecting numerous snow-capped peaks including Pandim. The path to the Goecha La climbs steeply above the lake and, beyond this, we can see the summits of the Kangchenjunga group.
We leave camp in the very early hours to reach the Goecha La pass (4800m). The climb to the pass is over steep glacial moraine but we are rewarded with excellent views of the eastern wall of Kangchenjunga. The climb takes about 5-6 hours and is undoubtedly the highpoint of the trek in all possible senses.
We will then return to our camp at Lamuney and continue our descent to Thangsing. From here we will trek on to Tsokha and then back to Yuksom, where the trek ends.
This trek is graded as tough: to join a trek at this grade it is important that you have a good level of fitness. Previous experience of trekking is preferred, although not essential. Treks at this grade will usually involve extended time spent in high mountain terrain and there may be adverse weather conditions. Altitude may be a factor but is not always so.
If this trek doesnt tickle your fancy, or you have a diary clash, we have teamed up with open challenges providers who run a whole series of treks and challenges throughout the year. This way you can still trek for Teenage Cancer Trust to the destination and date you choose.
