Century cycle challenge

May 2010: Over 200 people got on their bikes to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust by cycling 100 miles from Nevill Holt in Leicestershire to Burnham Deepdale in Norfolk. Among the cyclists was Chris Edwards, from rock band Kasabian and Dr Helen Hatcher a consultant in Teenage and Young Adult Medical Oncology at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.

This was the fourth Century Cycle Challenge to take place in the region since 2006. Chris Jee and the committee were inspired to organise the event in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust after seeing close friends and family affected by cancer at a young age.

This strenuous cycle challenge has now raised an estimated £120,000 for the charity and will be split between two areas, helping young people fight cancer in both Leicestershire and East Anglia.

One of the event organisers, Chris Jee, said: “We’re delighted that we have had so much interest in this year’s Century Cycle Challenge and that riders are so keen to support our chosen charity. Myself and others on the committee have seen young friends and family go through leukemia. This, combined with the fact that we were all incredibly impressed with the work that Teenage Cancer Trust does to support this age group is why we chose them to benefit from everyone’s fantastic fundraising efforts.

The Hub

The Hub, Teenage Cancer Trust and Clic Sargent have come together in making a series of design and media workshops for young people with cancer.

The Hub National Centre for crafts & Design is in the centre of Sleaford, and it has a variety of exhibitions throughout the year. For the past couple of months teenagers from The East Midlands have come together on a Saturday morning to take part in different workshops. The first was on 23rd January and was a workshop on Radio. The teenagers worked together on recording interviews with members of the public, presenting and recording their own radio programme which went out on Sirens Radio station a few days later.

The second workshop was in February and the subject was Animation, this is where they had to think of what they liked or what their hobby was, and draw a series of visual pictures to be able to adapt into a animation film. At the following workshop characters were made from plasticine and then were moved in different ways on film to create a wallis and Grommet style video.

Plans for the future

Plans for future workshops have been confirmed for the coming months. The content of these workshops will include, trainer painting, Papermaking with silks and cottons, journal making, and photography workshop.

Janie Lismore, The Head of Learning for The Hub has informed us that she has received £1500.00 of funding for the hub, from C1 Media, and she wants to use this money to do additional work with us and our teenagers. She felt that because the animation workshop had gone down so well previously we should carry on that theme.

The dates are to be confirmed but will be held every three months, for more information and details please email Lisa Pallett

The Robbie Anderson Cancer Trust

The RACT was set up in December 2005 by Robbie. Its aim was to raise money for the children's oncology ward at Leicester Royal Infirmary. Robbie wanted to start by funding a large wall-hung plasma T.V. for the teenagers room on the ward in time for Christmas. Fund raising began in his village and the television was on the ward for Christmas Eve.
