Father and son to climb Kilimanjaro and raise £100k

On 18 August 2010, father and son duo Archie and Ross Maclean will set off on an adventurous fundraising journey...

At 19,340ft Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing mountain in the world. Over eleven days, Archie (53) and Ross (25) will endure the hardest physical challenge either of them have encountered as they attempt to reach the summit and raise £100,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust.

The Maclean's have spent the last few months organising special fund-raising events, including a fantastic competition to win a Toyota IQ, which has been donated by Border Toyota and will be key to hitting their extremely ambitious target - £100,000.

All the costs for the climb will be paid by Border Toyota and every penny donated will go directly to the Teenage Cancer Trust. www.dontstopbelieving.org.uk

Rangers Football Club

Teenage Cancer Trust in Scotland were delighted to be presented with a cheque for £30,000 from The Rangers Charity Foundation after a successful season as their National Charity Partner. The generosity and support of Rangers fans throughout the season has enabled this significant sum to be raised – funding a kitchen/eating area at the new unit at the Children’s Hospital in Glasgow and a chill-out room at the new unit at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh.

Rangers star Lee McCulloch said: “It’s a real privilege to present this cheque today and to think about how many young people will benefit from the new Teenage Cancer Trust units during the years to come. I’m proud we’ve been able to support such a special cause and I know that everyone at Rangers wishes the Teenage Cancer Trust well in all the work they do.

Charlie Miller’s North Pole Adventure

Some people will go a long way to get a good haircut! Last month, award-winning hairdresser Charlie Miller packed his scissors before the heading for the North Pole to give the coolest haircut of his career. Charlie embarked on the journey with entrepreneur Sir Tom Farmer who originally penned the idea asking Charlie to join him and cut his hair whilst standing at the geographical North Pole enduring temperatures of -35 degrees.

Teenage Cancer Trust has been supported by Sir Tom and Charlie for a number of years with Sir Tom raising money to help fund equipment for use in our specialised units and Charlie lending his expertise and support in the styling of real hair wigs for teenage cancer patients.

"This was an adventure of a lifetime and one Tom and I will never forget. It wasn’t the ideal place for cutting hair but a great opportunity to help Teenage Cancer Trust.
Although I’d been doing NHS-supplied fibre wigs for adults for many years, my work in cutting and styling real hair wigs for teenagers and young people with cancer has become my absolute focus. The more involved I became the more deeply I felt the devastating effect hair loss has on a young person and how important it is to their wellbeing to have a wig that really belongs to them”.

The money raised by Charlie will go directly to Teenage Cancer Trust’s Hair 4U project providing free real hair wigs for cancer patients aged 13-24. We can’t thank Charlie & Sir Tom enough for their sterling fundraising efforts and to those who kindly donated money to this worthy cause. It will make a huge difference!

01/06/10

PwC chose Teenage Cancer Trust as the benefitting charity for this year’s 5-a-side 'World Cup 2010' tournament. This tournament comes on the heels of the very successful 2006 tournament run in Glasgow where over 200 clients and colleagues participated in a sun-soaked and enjoyable afternoon, joining forces in raising money for a great cause. left Two 32 team tournaments took place on Friday 11th June at Powerleague Sighthill in Edinburgh and Pro-Soccer Rouken Glen in Glasgow, coinciding with the start of the FIFA World Cup in Johannesburg.

The tournament began at 11am and followed the group and knock out fixturing of this year's FIFA World Cup to find our champions. To join in with the festivities, participants were able to watch the opening game of the FIFA World Cup with South Africa v Mexico at 3.00pm on the big screens. The atmosphere on the day was palpable. There was a fantastic raffle held too plus attendees paid a set fee to register their team bringing in approximately £11,000 over both events.

The money raised will go towards Teenage Cancer Trust’s East and West of Scotland Appeals to help us achieve our goal that every teenager and young adult in Scotland diagnosed with cancer has access to a TCT unit and the services that we provide.

Congratulations to the winners on the day and a big thankyou to PwC for inviting us along on the day.

A message...

...from Edith Bowmann

"Being a teenager is hard enough. Being a teenager and dealing with cancer is another matter.

"The incredible TCT units provide an environment that allows them to be themselves, a home from home with a positive attitude needed to fight cancer. Every teenager in the area who needs access to one of these units should have that right."
