Empowering young people through education

The ‘Big C’ is a topic that is not often talked about, yet the latest statistics show that 40% of the UK population are likely to be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. The majority of people who will be diagnosed with cancer will be aged over 60 years, however around one third of these people will be aged under 60 years and as cancer is not on the curriculum in schools, young people can often leave school not knowing what cancer even is – apart from knowing it is a very scary and negative word.

We feel it is important that young people are provided with clear information about cancer in a positive way and in a supported environment. During our FREE education talks we talk about how to spot the early signs of cancer and provide the kind of information that will empower young people to be aware of their bodies and to speak to someone should they ever have cause for concern. We also give healthy living advice and encourage young people to make positive choices about their diet and exercise to improve their health and reduce the risk of cancer.

Free Information

We have developed a fully interactive learning resource teenagecancertrust.myresourcecloud.net that compliments the education talks and can be used within a classroom or learning environment. The FREE resource places cancer within the context of day to day teen life using lesson plans, video clips and interactive quizzes and provides information about the facts and fiction and who to talk to regarding the issue of cancer.

Our Education team offer a free programme that provides information, education and advice about cancer, cancer treatment, prevention and healthy living that reaches around 130,000 young people across the UK each year. Skin cancer is one of the fastest growing cancers in the UK and is now one of the most common cancers in young people. We run a campaign each year called SHUNBURN that aims to highlight the issue of skin cancer and encourage young people to enjoy the sun safely. Our education team offer specific SHUNBURN talks and we have developed resources for teacher to use in the classroom. The FREE RESOURCES can be found here teenagecancertrust.org/what-we-do/education/shunburn
