Birmingham Children's Hospital
The teenage and young adult areas in Waterfall House at Birmingham Children’s Hospital are for 13-18 year olds. You’ll find six beds in the teenage and young adult inpatient unit, located on level two.
On the unit, you’ll be looked after by a friendly, expert team including nurses and youth workers who specialise in supporting teenagers and young adults with cancer.
You’ll also meet plenty of other experts in different areas of cancer treatment, such as doctors, dietitians and physiotherapists. You might hear this being called the multidisciplinary team, or MDT for short.
The teenage and young adult inpatient unit has wall art, Teenage Cancer Trust wifi, Sky TV, a pool table, jukebox and comfy and cosy furniture in the social space. If you’re an inpatient, this means you’ll stay on the unit overnight, sometimes for several nights at a time depending on your health and the type of treatment you’re having.
The teenage and young adult outpatient bay and assessment room on level one also has wall art and two mobile gaming stations. If you’re an outpatient, this means you’ll go in during the day for treatment and other appointments, but won’t stay in hospital overnight.
Facilities at Birmingham Children’s Hospital
Everything on the unit is designed to help you feel more comfortable and in control, to connect with others your age going through cancer too, and to keep up with friends, studies and everything that’s important in your life as a teenager.
Family and friends are welcome to visit, and there’s space for parents or carers to stay over. Facilities include:
- Social zone with pool table, jukebox and TV area

- Sky TV
- Outpatient area (level one)
- Two mobile gaming units
