University Hospital of Wales Llewellyn Unit, Cardiff

The Llewellyn Teenage Cancer Trust unit at University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff is designed for 14-25 year olds. It has eight inpatient beds and a day care facility. All bedrooms are equipped with comfy soft furnishings, TV and gaming. We also provide free Teenage Cancer Trust wifi.

On the unit, you’ll be looked after by a friendly, expert team including nurses and youth workers who specialise in supporting teenagers and young adults with cancer.

You’ll also meet plenty of other experts in different areas of cancer treatment, such as doctors, dietitians and physiotherapists. You might hear this being called the multidisciplinary team, or MDT for short.

If you’re an inpatient, this means you’ll stay on the unit overnight, sometimes for several nights at a time depending on your health and the type of treatment you’re having.

You might also visit the day care facility as an outpatient, which means you’ll go in during the day for treatment and other appointments, but won’t stay in hospital overnight.

We opened the award-winning Llewellyn Teenage Cancer Trust unit in 2009 and refurbished the recreation room in 2016.

Support across South Wales

If you live a long way from Cardiff, you might have the choice to be treated closer to home, depending on your age and the treatment you’re having.

Teenage Cancer Trust also supports specialist nurses and youth workers across South Wales, as part of our outreach service.

Your care team will discuss this with you if it might be a suitable option.

Wherever you’re treated, we’re here to make sure you get the best possible care and have all the information and support you need throughout treatment and beyond.

The unit is split over two floors, with young people receiving day care treatment upstairs and inpatient treatment downstairs. The kitchen table is a real hub for bringing young people together to support each other.

Everything on the unit is designed to help you feel more comfortable and in control, to connect with others your age going through cancer too, and to keep up with friends, studies and everything that’s important in your life as a teenager or young adult.

Family and friends are welcome to visit, and there’s space for parents, carers or partners to stay over. Facilities include:

  • Two three-bed bays, two single en-suite rooms
  • Three day care chairs within outpatients’ area
  • Examination room
  • Chill out area and TV area with gaming facilities, jukebox
  • Large patients’ fridge
  • Dining area
  • Computer area
