All Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer’s Inquiry into Inequalities in Cancer

01/12/09

Simon Davies, Chief Executive of Teenage Cancer Trust comments:

“Teenage Cancer Trust welcomes this inquiry and urges the NHS not to lose sight of the needs of the 2,000 teenagers and young adults diagnosed with cancer every year. We know that they experience some of the harshest inequalities in cancer care. Particularly at risk are those between the ages of 16 and 18 who can find themselves in the no man’s land between paediatric and adult cancer specialists.

‘Too many young people wait a long time for a cancer diagnosis and this has a massive impact on their treatment options, psychological wellbeing and most importantly their chances of survival. A speedy diagnostic phase is important, but we need to make sure that GPs are considering cancer as a real option for young people and referring to the best possible specialist treatment and professional care.”
