Sun bed use in Scotland
24/02/09
Using sunbeds, even for a short amount of time, exposes the skin to harmful UV rays which increase your risk of skin cancer.
Teenage Cancer Trust is concerned that young people are increasingly using sunbeds to get a tan. Many don’t realise that the damage they are doing to their skin when they are young can lead to skin cancer in later life.
The Scottish legislation banning under-18s from using sunbeds put the country ahead of the rest of the UK in taking a responsible approach to helping protect young people from skin cancer. But the issue here is informed and educated choice and Teenage Cancer Trust would urge all sun bed operators to provide sufficient information on their risks which will allow adults to take charge of their own health by making an informed choice about sun bed use.
Teenage Cancer Trust would recommend that if you must have a tan, please use a fake tan. This will mean that you do not need to sunbathe or use sunbeds and it is the safest way to achieve your desired colour without increasing your risk of getting cancer.
