Blues star James McFadden today visited Teenage Cancer Trust’s unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital to highlight a £20,000 Premier League donation.

The money forms part of the Barclays Premier League Places for Players initiative and will go towards facilities at Teenage Cancer Trust’s new unit at Birmingham’s Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

The new Teenage Cancer Trust twelve-bed unit is due to be complete later this year and will provide a recreational space, kitchen, computer zone and conservatory for cancer patients aged 13 to 24 from across the West Midlands. Today’s donation will go towards equipping the ‘chill-out zone’ with a pool table, digital jukebox, gaming and IT area.

James McFadden said: “It was a pleasure to meet the staff and patients at one of Teenage Cancer Trust’s Birmingham units. It’s a wonderful place and it’s fantastic that the Premier League have donated £20,000 via Places for Players. Blues are absolutely committed to supporting great work in the local community. We’re really proud to be able to give this money to Teenage Cancer Trust and their units in Birmingham.”

Deborah Drinkall, Teenage Cancer Trust Regional Fundraising Manager for the West Midlands said: “Teenage Cancer Trust is grateful both for the support we have received from Birmingham City Football Club and this amazing donation from the Premier League. Our units make a huge difference to a young persons experience and gives them the chance to still be teenagers despite being in hospital. Today’s donation will help give more teenagers with cancer in the West Midlands this chance.”

Under the Barclays Premier League Places for Players initiative every Premier League club choses a charity that will receive a player visit and a donation of £20,000. The aim is that this money will have significant impact on the charities work and leave a genuine long- lasting legacy in the local community. The scheme has also seen Birmingham City players visit a number of charities and community projects over the course of the 2009/10 season.

Teenage Cancer Trust has units at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, for patients aged 13 to 18 and at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, for patients aged 16 to 24. A new unit is currently being built at Birmingham’s Royal Orthopedic Hospital, specialising in bone cancers.
