The original Young Oncology Unit at the Christie Hospital in Manchester was one of the first Teenage Cancer Trust units and opened in 1998. The new Young Oncology Unit was opened in June 2014 in partnership with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. Teenage Cancer Trust provided design advice and recreational equipment for this area.
Teenage Cancer Trust nursing and support service
The facilities and staff provided on the Young Oncology Unit unit are part of the North West region where Teenage Cancer Trust are delivering a nursing and support service for young people who are being treated in hospitals in the area. This service is designed to enable us to support young people wherever they are and whenever they need us.
As part of this care, Teenage Cancer Trust fund 10 expert staff in the North West:
- Lead Nurse
- 5 Youth Support Coordinators, including 2 based within The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and 1 based within the Proton Beam Therapy Centre
- 3 Clinical Nurse Specialists
- MDT Coordinator
They champion the needs of young people with cancer and provide specialist expertise and care in local hospitals.
