How much does it cost?
Nothing, nada, zero! And did we mention it’s free? All your accommodation, travel, food, feather boas, glitter and other essentials are taken care of – thanks in part to our generous funding from Children in Need.
When will I know if I’ve got a place?
Every application is sorted regionally. Each of our regional groups are allocated a limited number of places, with preference being given to young people who have not attended before. The Group Leader for each region will make the final decision on who is allocated a place (we do our best to make sure as many people as possible can come).
Can I apply if I wasn’t treated on a Teenage Cancer Trust unit?
Yes! Find Your Sense of Tumour welcomes applications from anyone aged 13-25 who’s faced cancer in the last 5 years. But remember that we have to medically assess each application to see if we can offer you a place and places are limited.
Can parents/guardians apply on behalf of their son or daughter?
Yes. But please do discuss the idea with them.
How will I get to the venue?
Most people travel in a group from a Teenage Cancer Trust unit along with their Youth Support Coordinator. But if you need to travel solo, we can help you make arrangements.
How long does it last?
It’s one weekend, kicking off on Friday evening and finishing up on Sunday afternoon. Trust us, it will fly by!
Who’ll be there?
About 100 others aged 13-17 who have (or have had) cancer. Plus a big, friendly bunch of Teenage Cancer Trust staff and support teams to make sure the weekend goes smoothly. So there'll always be one of us around if you need anything.
What kind of activities are there?
In a word – loads! But don’t worry, you’re in charge of how much you want to do and when you just want to relax.
There’ll be plenty of inspiring talks full of useful information, fun workshops about things like friendship, exercise, going back to school, relationships and fertility. But it’s not all about cancer – phew!
If you’re feeling adventurous, Whitemoor Lakes offers loads of outdoor activities including climbing walls, abseiling and zip wires. And there’s also something for indoor types, with massages, art workshops and makeovers. Feel free to mix and match.
Do I have to join in with everything?
Absolutely not! This weekend is all about you. So join in when you feel like it and chill out when you’ve had enough – or just feel like chatting.
Where will I sleep?
You’ll be sharing a room with 4 or 5 others. We’ll keep people together in the groups they came in – with separate rooms for boys and girls. All rooms have chill out areas with a TV and small kitchen to make you feel at home.
What if I feel unwell while I’m there?
Don't worry! We’ll have a medical team from Central Medical Services on-site all weekend offering 24-hour medical support. And they’ll also look after any medication that you need to take while you’re there.
Are meals included?
Absolutely! Nobody goes hungry at Find Your Sense of Tumour. There’s dinner on Friday and Saturday, plus breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Every meal has two options, so you should find something you like. And if you have any special dietary requirements, let us know in advance and we’ll take care of it.
What clothes should I bring?
With so many outdoor activities on offer at Whitemoor Lakes, comfortable shoes (think trainers or walking boots) are a must. We also recommend a warm jumper and waterproof (just in case) plus comfortable clothes for the rest of the weekend. And don’t forget your sun cream!
What about fancy dress?
We love fancy dress at Find Your Sense of Tumour! Especially on Saturday night at our infamous showcase. We’ll tell you the theme when your place is confirmed so you’ll have plenty chance to prepare. And whether you want to go next-level, or play it totally low-key, that’s fine by us. We just want you to have a good time. There’s usually a props box too, to help with finishing touches.
How much money should I bring?
You won’t need much. All the main things are free, like we said. But you might want to bring about £10-15 in case you decide to visit the Whitemoor Lakes shop for snacks.
What if I’ve got more questions?
No problem. We’ve got more answers! Just email our team, speak to hospital staff, or call us on 020 7612 0370.
