In December, Melanie took on her first ever Triathlon as a practice run for her planned Half Iron Man Triathlon in February. Despite the shocked faces of her training partners when they discovered she’d signed up for an Iron Man without ever completing a triathlon before, Melanie went on to sign up for four more events, giving her an incredible five consecutive weeks of challenges throughout January and February.
She began with the ‘warm up’ portion of her challenge, beginning with a Sprint Triathlon (750m swim, 20km bike, and 5km run) on the 13 January, followed by the Muscat full Marathon on the 19 January, and the Dubai Full Marathon on the 16 January.
Then the real challenge began – the Dubai Half Iron Man Triathlon – which includes a brutal 1.9km swim, 90km bike, finished with a half marathon.
Finally, Melanie ‘cooled off’ with one last Sprint Triathlon on the 10 February.
Melanie has already raised close to £4,000 in memory of Ryan. She describes Ryan as a “real life superhero [who] touched the hearts of every single person he met”.
Training for this has really helped me cope with losing Ryan and doing this challenge for Teenage Cancer Trust in his name made it so much easier to push through. I have actually really enjoyed it and feel so lucky to be fit and healthy to do these kind of events, I just wish Ryan was here to see it all.
And just when we thought Melanie’s challenges were over…she will be taking on the 2 Oceans Ultra Marathon in Cape Town on 31 March!
