The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, Glasgow
The Teenage Cancer Trust unit at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre is for 16-24 year olds and has eight inpatient beds. All bedrooms are equipped with comfy soft furnishings, TV and gaming. We also provide free Teenage Cancer Trust wifi.
On the unit, you’ll be looked after by a friendly, expert team including nurses and youth workers who specialise in supporting teenagers and young adults with cancer.
You’ll also meet plenty of other experts in different areas of cancer treatment, such as doctors, dietitians and physiotherapists. You might hear this being called the multidisciplinary team, or MDT for short.
If you’re an inpatient, this means you’ll stay on the unit overnight, sometimes for several nights at a time depending on your health and the type of treatment you’re having.
You might also visit as an outpatient, which means you’ll go in during the day for treatment and other appointments, but won’t stay in hospital overnight.
Support across Scotland
If you live a long way from Glasgow, you might have the choice to be treated closer to home, depending on your age and the treatment you’re having.
Teenage Cancer Trust also supports specialist nurses and specially designed spaces at a number of other hospitals across Scotland, as part of our outreach service.
Your care team will discuss this with you if it might be a suitable option.
Wherever you’re treated, we’re here to make sure you get the best possible care and have all the information and support you need throughout treatment and beyond.
Facilities at The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre
Everything on the unit is designed to help you feel more comfortable and in control, to connect with others your age going through cancer too, and to keep up with friends, studies and everything that’s important in your life as a teenager or young adult.
Family and friends are welcome to visit, and there’s space for parents, carers or partners to stay over. Facilities include:
- Four single en-suite rooms
- Two two-bed bays
- Recreational area with kitchen diner
- Chill out area and separate conservatory for gaming and activities, musical instruments, pool table
- All bedrooms equipped with soft furnishings, bespoke furniture, TV and gaming facilities
- Dedicated Teenage Cancer Trust wifi
