Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre
The Teenage Cancer Trust unit at Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre is designed for 16-24 year olds and is known as ‘Area 61’. It has five en-suite inpatient beds and day care facilities. All bedrooms are equipped with comfy soft furnishings, TV and gaming. We also provide free Teenage Cancer Trust wifi.
On the unit, you’ll be looked after by a friendly, expert team including nurses and youth workers who specialise in supporting teenagers and young adults with cancer.
You’ll also meet plenty of other experts in different areas of cancer treatment, such as doctors, dietitians and physiotherapists. You might hear this being called the multidisciplinary team, or MDT for short.
If you’re an inpatient, this means you’ll stay on the unit overnight, sometimes for several nights at a time depending on your health and the type of treatment you’re having.
You might also visit as an outpatient, which means you’ll go in during the day for treatment and other appointments, but won’t stay in hospital overnight.
Support across the South West
If you live a long way from Bristol, you might have the choice to be treated closer to home, depending on your age and the treatment you’re having.
Teenage Cancer Trust also supports specialist nurses and specially designed spaces at other hospitals across the South West, as part of our outreach service.
Your care team will discuss this with you if it might be a suitable option.
Wherever you’re treated, we’re here to make sure you get the best possible care and have all the information and support you need throughout treatment and beyond.
Facilities at Area 61
Inspired by Bristol’s artistic culture, a local graffiti artist incorporated South West businesses including Concorde and Somerset Cider into the wall artwork across Area 61 to provide a sense of home from home for young people.
Everything on the unit is designed to help you feel more comfortable and in control, to connect with others your age going through cancer too, and to keep up with friends, studies and everything that’s important in your life as a teenager or young adult.
Family and friends are welcome to visit, and there’s space for parents, carers or partners to stay over. The outpatient facility also has three dedicated chairs for teenage and young adult patients to create a sense of privacy for young people receiving day care treatment.
