On the unit, you’ll be looked after by a friendly, expert team including nurses and youth workers who specialise in supporting teenagers and young adults with cancer.

You’ll also meet plenty of other experts in different areas of cancer treatment, such as doctors, dietitians and physiotherapists. You might hear this being called the multidisciplinary team, or MDT for short.

If you’re an inpatient, this means you’ll stay on the unit overnight, sometimes for several nights at a time depending on your health and the type of treatment you’re having.

You might also visit as an outpatient, which means you’ll go in during the day for treatment and other appointments, but won’t stay in hospital overnight.

Support across the East Midlands

If you live a long way from Nottingham, you might have the choice to be treated closer to home, depending on your age and the treatment you’re having.

There are specialist teenage and young adult (TYA) cancer nurses who support young people across the East Midlands, as well as specially designed spaces in a number of other hospitals, as part of the region’s TYA outreach service.

Your care team will discuss this with you if it might be a suitable option.
