The Ward 3 Teenage Cancer Trust young adult area for 16-24 year olds has three inpatient bedrooms. The area has a teenage and young adult social space with a TV, gaming, kitchenette and comfy soft furnishings. We also provide free Teenage Cancer Trust wifi.
The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham is one of the largest orthopaedic centres in Europe, and specialises in complex surgery for young people with bone cancer and soft tissue tumours.
On the young adult area, you’ll be looked after by a friendly, expert team including nurses and youth workers who specialise in supporting teenagers and young adults with cancer.
You’ll also meet plenty of other experts in different areas of cancer treatment, such as doctors, dietitians and physiotherapists. You might hear this being called the multidisciplinary team, or MDT for short.
If you’re an inpatient, this means you’ll stay on the ward overnight, sometimes for several nights at a time depending on your health and the type of treatment you’re having.
The Ward 3 Teenage Cancer Trust young adult area at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham opened in July 2013. There are also dedicated teenage and young adult bed spaces in the recovery suite in theatre, and the high dependency unit.
