Great North Run 2026 Marquee volunteer

We are looking for volunteers to lend a hand in the Teenage Cancer Trust Marquee at the Great North Run this year. It means so much to our runners to be looked after on the day and you will be playing a big part in making sure we can make our runners feel special and appreciated for their incredible challenge they are undertaking.

Date:
  • When: Sunday 13 September 2026
  • Where: Great North Run - in the runners village near the finish line on the seafront in South Shields
  • Supported by: Emily Gifford from the Mass Participation team

What will I do?

  • Chat with our runners and their families about their experience running the half marathon and their reasons for running, making them feel cared for and looked after
  • The Teenage Cancer Trust team will also need assistance with various roles in the marquee, so you’ll also be assisting with the event management to ensure that things run smoothly. This may involve:
    • Moving chairs
    • Offering food and drink to runners
    • Making tea/coffee
    • Helping to keep the Marquee tidy
  • Be a friendly and approachable face of the charity

What will I gain?

  • The opportunity to be a part of an enthusiastic team of volunteers at an exciting event
  • Experience at a major sporting event
  • Reasonable travel expenses of £25 per volunteer per day will be covered in line with our expenses policy.
  • Support on the day as needed, from a dedicated member of staff.

What skills do I need?

  • A listening ear and willingness to chat with runners
  • Proactive and willing to lend a hand
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Reliability & punctuality
