Volunteer Speaker role

Could you play a key role in spreading the word about the work of Teenage Cancer Trust to help us reach new supporters across the UK? You would be bringing your skills to help us raise awareness of the services we offer young people with cancer. 

If you are a confident public speaker or you are looking to develop your public speaking skills, you are passionate about the work of Teenage Cancer Trust or have a personal story about how the charity has supported you, then this is role for you.  

Deploying speaker volunteers will support our aim to have Teenage Cancer Trust representation at more community-based events throughout the UK and ultimately to help us make sure young people gets the best care and support.

  • Where? In your local area.
  • Where? Once you have completed your learning and training we’ll get in touch when a speaking opportunity arises. Ideally, we’re looking for people who are willing to help out a few times a year depending on demand.
  • Supported by: Dedicated member of our regional volunteering team (who will be your volunteer manager). 
    Once you apply, we’ll forward your application to the right team member and they’ll be in touch to introduce themselves.
  • Please note, speaker volunteers will need to complete a criminal records declaration before they are deployed to their first event. The minimum age for volunteering in this capacity is 18 years old.
  • Reasons for becoming a speaker

Many people may have heard of Teenage Cancer Trust, but they are not always aware of what we do and how we support young people with cancer or about the many ways they can get involved and support us. 

That is where you come in. You will tell the story of how we support young people and the services we provide, raising awareness of our work and inspiring new supporters to get involved. You can also use your lived experience to enhance the impact you will have.

What will I do?

  • Deliver effective, informative and interesting presentations and talks about the services we provide to young people with cancer. Including lived experience if you have one.
  • Facilitate information stands at local university and community events
  • Represent Teenage Cancer Trust at cheque presentations or local events. 
  • Pass on donations to regional fundraiser or, with support and training, bank donations
  • An enthusiasm for the work of Teenage Cancer Trust.
  • A willingness to learn about the services the charity provides young people with cancer.
  • Experience in public speaking is helpful but not essential. Our training can provide a great opportunity to develop your public speaking skills and confidence speaking to groups of people. 
  • Good interpersonal skills 
  • Reliability and punctuality

What will I gain?

  • You will be part of 3-4 week training programme which will touch on all aspects of speaking about Teenage Cancer Trust and will equip you to explain what the charity does to variety of audiences.
  • Materials and training to support you delivering high quality talks
  • Regular support from a dedicated volunteer manager (a member of staff) in your role
  • Experience of public speaking and a resulting confidence boost

  • We’ll reimburse your travel to and from events as per our expenses policy.

  • Confidence in public speaking and presenting or a desire to discover and improve your confidence in your public speaking skills.

  • Good interpersonal skills Reliability and punctuality.
