Equity, Diversity & Inclusion: Our Progress So Far

Like many organisations, we had some difficult and uncomfortable conversations in 2020, resulting in some key actions related to Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI). Here are some highlights of the progress we’ve made so far.

Since 2020, we’ve put in place Teenage Cancer Trust’s first-ever…

1

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Lead – a full-time, permanent role leading on embedding Equity, Diversity & Inclusion into everything we do at Teenage Cancer Trust.

2

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Working Group – formed of colleagues across the organisation to champion this work, sharing ideas and reflections while holding the organisation to account on its EDI plans and strategy.

3

Race Network – for all colleagues who identify as a person of colour and/or from an ethnically diverse community to connect, socialise and discuss issues relevant to their identity and community, and to reduce feelings of isolation both socially and professionally.

And as of April 2022, we launched our first Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy to solidify our commitment, providing a detailed roadmap for more progress and bringing about change.

Commitment, investment, action

As well as the steps forward outlined above, here are a few more things we’ve done since 2020.

  • Signed LGBTQ+ cancer support statement – an open commitment to improve education and awareness of the care needs of LGBTQ+ patients with cancer, working with a coalition of clinicians and charities
  • Signed up to Inclusive Employers, a workplace inclusion membership organisation
  • Hosted a Celebrate EDI session at the Teenage Cancer Trust all-colleague event
  • EDI calendar of activity including marking LGBTQ+ History Month, Black History Month and Disability History Month
  • ‘EDI Drop in’ sessions to develop understanding and learning
  • Quarterly EDI newsletter with updates
  • EDI training workshops delivered to colleagues in 2021
  • Charity Governance – working with Trustees on role and responsibilities in EDI work

This process is a journey, and we have a lot of learning to do. We will use our values of Determined, United, Spirited and Kind to guide us along the way.

We would love to hear your thoughts on our EDI work and anything you think we should consider.
