Comedian’s ‘spinetingling’ moment on stage at the Royal Albert Hall
Teenage Cancer Trust’s annual shows are undoubtedly one of the best comedy nights hosted at the Royal Albert Hall. And at the 2025 shows, one young person had an experience to remember.

Every comedian remembers certain gigs as special – but for standup Aiden Cowie, taking to the stage at the Royal Albert Hall last year was unforgettable for several reasons.
Aiden was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer in his face aged 18. The tumour was the size of a man’s fist and he endured 32 hours of surgery which saw him lose an eye, cheekbone, teeth and part of his jaw.
Describing his symptoms and diagnosis, Aiden said: “Initially, I thought I had a cold. I couldn’t breathe out of one side of my nose and my nose was running all the time. My eyes were constantly watering, and I felt congested. My GP ruled out the cold and said it was a sinus infection. I had two or three rounds of antibiotics, but nothing changed. Eventually he said wasn’t entirely sure what was going on and sent me to a hospital for a scan.”
After two biopsies, Aiden’s parents received a call to tell them that their son had cancer.
“Right away I knew something was wrong because of how mum and dad were acting,” he says. “Looking back at it now, I had an inclination it would be something bad. The pictures people have in their head about being diagnosed with cancer is that they will be in total shock, but the reality didn’t hit me straight away.
“I don’t know if that’s because I got the news second hand, but I was quite upbeat. I think I might have been acting upbeat because my parents were clearly very worried.”
Starting out in stand-up
Aiden was supported by Teenage Cancer Trust nurses Amanda and Diane, who helped him though his treatment, and afterwards when it came to returning to university and ‘normal’ life.
“There was no judgment, only genuine support from people who showed me the positives that I was overlooking,” he said. “Without Amanda and Dianne, there’s no way I would be where I am now.”
Aiden started doing stand-up comedy in 2018 following his surgery, and a large part of what had got him through his treatment was making jokes and finding the funny side in his situation. In early 2025, as the team at Teenage Cancer Trust were finalising the lineup for that year’s fundraising shows, they chose a film about his experiences to be shown on the comedy night. And then came the call that Aiden could never have expected - he was invited to join big names including Romesh Ranganathan, Zoe Lyons and Josh Widdicombe onstage at the Royal Albert Hall.
Suddenly, Aiden found himself backstage with people he’d idolised from being a child.
He said: “They saw that I was nervous – I was in a room full of folk I grew up watching on TV and the Royal Albert Hall was the biggest thing I’ve ever done. The support was really nice, it was a real confidence boost.
“I valued their seal of approval and them saying ‘yeah go for it!’ that’s been a real motivation for me since then and helped me believe I do have what it takes if I stick at it.”

A ‘spinetingling’ experience
Thinking back to the moment, Aiden said: “If I shut my eyes now I can still put myself back there – it’s one of the moments of all time for me.
“To see the film from the side of the stage, walk out to one of my favourite Who songs and get that standing ovation – I know it’s a cliché but it was spinetingling. I could really feel the care and love from people when they heard what I’d been through.”
Since then Aiden has played three headline shows of his own, done his first-ever hour-long solo show and supported Gary Meikle on his national tour. He says that the support he got from his fellow comedians at the Royal Albert Hall helped his confidence, and to make the most of pportunities.
“The feedback from them afterwards gave me the feeling that I’ve got something to chase after,” said Aiden. “I didn’t have that imposter syndrome so much anymore. So last year I took a massive step up.”
