Welcoming the publication of the Northern Ireland Cancer Strategy and Funding Plan, Kate Collins, Chief Executive, Teenage Cancer Trust, said:
“This first 10-year cancer strategy for Northern Ireland marks a huge leap forward. We are delighted that the Northern Ireland Government’s intentions so closely align with Teenage Cancer Trust’s drive to ensure that every young person with cancer has access to age-appropriate cancer support.
“The new strategy, which represents years of effort by many people and organisations which has vitally included significant input and direction from a wide range of young people, their families, and organisations, including Teenage Cancer Trust, recognises that every young person with cancer needs specialist care and support.
“We very much welcome the specific acknowledgment of the needs of children, and teenagers and young adults with cancer throughout the strategy. We particularly welcome the recognition that young people with cancer are in great need of psychological support, and the steps the strategy sets out to increase access to this support, something Teenage Cancer Trust has called for through our #NotOk campaign. We are glad to see recognition of the need to achieve earlier diagnosis for young people and of the need to focus on awareness campaigns and earlier detection for this age group as a priority.
“Teenage Cancer Trust will do all we can to support the implementation of the commitments in the strategy to improve the lives of young people with cancer across Northern Ireland.”
