Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield
The Teenage Cancer Trust Young Person’s Unit at Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield is designed for 16-24 year olds and has five inpatient beds. All bedrooms are equipped with comfy soft furnishings, mood lighting, TV and gaming.
On the unit, you’ll be looked after by a friendly, expert team including nurses and youth workers who specialise in supporting teenagers and young adults with cancer.
You’ll also meet plenty of other experts in different areas of cancer treatment, such as doctors, dietitians and physiotherapists. You might hear this being called the multidisciplinary team, or MDT for short.
If you’re an inpatient, this means you’ll stay on the unit overnight, sometimes for several nights at a time depending on your health and the type of treatment you’re having.
You might also visit as an outpatient, which means you’ll go in during the day for treatment and other appointments, but won’t stay in hospital overnight.
We opened the original Teenage Cancer Trust Young Person’s Unit at Weston Park Hospital in 2002 and refurbished it in 2015.
Support across the wider region
If you live a long way from Sheffield, you might have the choice to be treated closer to home, depending on your age and the treatment you’re having.
Teenage Cancer Trust also supports specialist nurses, youth workers and specially designed spaces at other hospitals across South Yorkshire, North and North East Lincolnshire, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire as part of our outreach service. Your care team will discuss this with you if it might be a suitable option.
Wherever you’re treated, we’re here to make sure you get the possible care and have all the information and support you need throughout treatment and beyond.
Facilities at Weston Park Hospital
The social space at Weston Park is known as Grand Central Station. This leads onto a garden terrace just for young people with cancer, which is a great space to hold peer support activities.
Everything on the unit is designed to help you feel more comfortable and in control, to connect with others your age going through cancer too, and to keep up with friends, studies and everything that’s important in your life as a teenager or young adult.
Family and friends are welcome to visit, and there’s space for parents, carers or partners to stay over. Facilities include:
- Kitchen
- ‘Grand Central’ social zone with sofas, TV, games, jukebox, crafts and musical instruments
