The Royal Marsden Hospital, Surrey
The Teenage Cancer Trust unit at the Royal Marsden is for 16-24 year olds and has nine inpatient beds. All bedrooms are equipped with comfy and cosy soft furnishings, bespoke furniture, TV, gaming facilities and wifi.
On the unit, you’ll be looked after by a friendly, expert team including nurses and youth workers who specialise in supporting teenagers and young adults with cancer.
You’ll also meet plenty of other experts in different areas of cancer treatment, such as doctors, dietitians and physiotherapists. You might hear this being called the multidisciplinary team, or MDT for short.
If you’re an inpatient, this means you’ll stay on the unit overnight, sometimes for several nights at a time depending on your health and the type of treatment you’re having.
You might also visit as an outpatient, which means you’ll go in during the day for treatment and other appointments, but won’t stay in hospital overnight.
Support across the South East
If you live a long way from the Royal Marsden, you might have the choice to be treated closer to home, depending on your age and the treatment you’re having.
Teenage Cancer Trust also supports specialist nurses, youth workers, and specially designed spaces at other hospitals across the South East, as part of our outreach service.
Your care team will discuss this with you if it might be a suitable option.
Wherever you’re treated, we’re here to make sure you get the best possible care and have all the information and support you need throughout treatment and beyond.
Facilities at the Royal Marsden unit
Everything on the unit is designed to help you feel more comfortable and in control, to connect with others your age going through cancer too, and to keep up with friends, studies and everything that’s important in your life as a teenager or young adult.
Family and friends are welcome to visit, and there’s space for parents, carers or partners to stay over. Facilities include:
- Two four-bed bays
- Education room and chill out zone
- Recreational room including gaming zone, pool table and jukebox
- Lounge and kitchen areas
- Therapy room offering complementary therapies
