5 tips for dealing with cancer treatment during Christmas
The holiday season can be a particularly challenging time for young people going through cancer treatment. When Jess was going through cancer treatment she took a few different steps to raising her spirits during the festive period. Here she shares her top 5 tips for people going treatment during the holidays.
1. Decorate your hospital room
Remember you might not want to see any of the decorations again as they may become a reminder of when you were sick. I had a mini tree, lights and window stickers!
2. Consider your soundtrack
Personally, I didn’t listen to Christmas music while I was still ill and in hospital. . I didn’t want that memory to be there when I heard the songs the following year.
3. Do some Christmas crafts
If you’re feeling up to it, some Christmas crafts like colouring, learning to crochet or painting can keep you busy. I had a Christmas themed colouring book by gem artwork.
4. Walk about and get out of your room/ward
Do this as much as you can but don’t over do it, you may think you can go further than your body will allow. A change of scenery and some fresh air can make a huge difference to how you feel, especially when you feel trapped in your room during Christmas time.
5. Try to stay positive and don’t compare
Even though it’s hard, don’t compare your Christmas to everyone else’s. Remember, you’re not alone and you’re doing the best you can!
