St James’s University Hospital, Leeds

On the unit, you’ll be looked after by a friendly, expert team including nurses and youth workers who specialise in supporting teenagers and young adults with cancer.

You’ll also meet plenty of other experts in different areas of cancer treatment, such as doctors, dietitians and physiotherapists. You might hear this being called the multidisciplinary team, or MDT for short.

If you’re an inpatient, this means you’ll stay on the unit overnight, sometimes for several nights at a time depending on your health and the type of treatment you’re having.

You might also visit as an outpatient, which means you’ll go in during the day for treatment and other appointments, but won’t stay in hospital overnight.

We opened the St James’s unit in October 2008 and refurbished it in January 2014. 

Support across the wider region

If you live a long way from Leeds, you might have the choice to be treated closer to home, depending on your age and the treatment you’re having.

Teenage Cancer Trust also supports specialist nurses, youth workers and specially designed spaces at other hospitals across Yorkshire and the Humber as part of our outreach service. Your care team will discuss this with you if it might be a suitable option.
