Did you know there was no specialist cancer care for young people in the NHS before our first unit opened in 1990?
Here at Teenage Cancer Trust, we know that young people need expert treatment and support from the moment they hear the word 'cancer'. We're the only UK charity providing this specialist nursing care and support for teenagers and young adults with cancer, and we're proud to partner with the NHS to support young people.
We have now opened 28 specialist units within NHS hospitals around the country. Our expert nurses and youth support staff work in NHS Principal Treatment Centres around the UK - in partnership with the NHS, we either fully or partly fund or 'adopt' these posts, depending on local need.
But we want to be better.
Right now, almost half of young people with cancer aren't treated in our units. We need to reach every young person with cancer, no matter where they receive their treatment.
We're starting to build wider links across NHS networks so we can be there for young people in main cancer hospitals, local designated hospitals, or even in their own homes. We're determined to reach every young person with cancer in the UK and work with the NHS to make sure they're supported by experts in young people's cancer from the moment they're diagnosed.
